Students already holding teaching certificates in areas other than French may apply to the University to take coursework leading to certification in French, namely Second Teaching Field Certification in French. Students seeking second teaching field certification are not eligible for the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program. However, other education-related Master's programs are available, such as our regular MA program in French, which can be combined with our certification program, or other MA programs as described by the Graduate School.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are recommended to the New Jersey Department of Education for a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing which enables them to pursue a full-time teaching position in a public school. New teachers must successfully complete a one year induction program of teaching under a provisional certificate to be eligible for a permanent or standard New Jersey instructional certificate.

Important: Students at the undergraduate level (No earned Bachelor's Degree) seeking Initial Teacher Certification may enroll in the Teacher Education Program to earn a Teacher Certificate simultaneously (Contact Department Chairperson for details on how to enroll).

Second Teaching Field Certification in French at Montclair State University is open to students who wish to teach French in K-12 schools in New Jersey. Students seeking Second Teaching Field Certification in French must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program and follow the sequence below. It is expected that candidates for Teacher Certification in French demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken French. Their academic backgrounds should include courses in language (grammar, phonetics, etc) and culture (literature and civilization). If they have not already taken the equivalent of 30 credits in French, at least twelve of which are at the 300-level or higher, these courses should be taken at Montclair State University as part of their academic program. The specific requirements of the Second Teaching Field Certification in French are as follows:

PART I - FRENCH COMPONENT

A. PREREQUISITE

Show evidence of a "coherent" undergraduate major in French (30-39 credits), or evidence of at least 30 credits of courses taken in French. Twelve (12) of the required credits must have been earned in courses at the 300 level or higher.

B. REQUIRED COURSES (30 CREDITS MINIMUM)

If the above pre-requisite is not met, students seeking Second Teaching Field Certification in French must satisfactorily complete the sequence below (30 credits minimum). The French courses below (or their equivalent) are recommended for teacher education candidates in French. These courses are primarily undergraduate courses. Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator for graduate equivalents. After evaluation of transcripts and language skills, the Graduate Program Coordinator in French will create an individual work program for each candidate.

PART II - EDUCATION COMPONENT

EDUCATION CLASSES (47 credits minimum)

In addition to showing evidence of 30 credits of French as explained above, certification candidates must take a number of education classes, including student teaching, as part of the education component. The education component represents around 47 credits minimum. However, for students who already have certification in one area and are seeking additional certification in French, both the education classes requirement and the student teaching component may be waived altogether. Consult with the Department of Curriculum and Teaching or the Center of Pedagogy for specific additional and/or up-to-date requirements. The information above is intended to provide preliminary general information to potential candidates. Certification programs and course requirements can vary with certification area and are subject to change by the NJ Department of Education regulations and university policy. Students must follow their official work programs of study, which they will receive upon their acceptance to the program.
