MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

DISCLAIMER: The information hereby provided is an attempt to guide students and provide an area where pertinent information regarding our programs can be found. However, it is important to note that the information herewith contained is subject to change at any time and may quickly become outdated or obsolete due to policy changes or slowness to update this page with new details. Please always refer to the Graduate School's Web page for the most recent announcements and policy changes.

Admission into the Master of Arts degree in French is open to students who hold a bachelor's degree and have completed at least 24 semester hours of undergraduate French or its equivalent. Students applying for admission must also satisfy the standard College requirements for admission to graduate study. International students are required to have as part of their application file the World Educational Services (WES) course equivalency evaluation, as well as adequate Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results. Typically, TOEFL is required of all students who have degrees from institutions in countries where English is not the language of instruction. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is also required of all students (citizens and non-citizens of the United States) seeking to enter the program. Scores from these tests must be sent to MSU directly by ETS (Educational Testing Services), the organization that administers the above tests. As of December 2003, Montclair State requires GRE scores of at least 425 in the Verbal and Quantitative components, and 2.5 in the Writing Assessment. TOEFL scores must be 550 minimum. International students who earned graduate and undergraduate degrees in countries where English is not the language of instruction will also be asked to take the MSU ESL placement test and score at Level IV or higher. Students who are admitted but did not score at this level may be required to take English classes that will help them improve their command of both spoken and written English. (These requirements may change at any time, please consult Graduate Program Coordinator).

After official notification of acceptance from the Graduate School, students should consult the Graduate Program Coordinator to plan their program of study. The program of study must be approved by the Graduate Program Coordinator each semester before registration. Transfer credits and curriculum substitutions must be authorized by the Graduate Program Coordinator. Courses will be offered on a rotating basis to allow for diversity in the offerings (Please consult Department chairperson or Graduate Program Coordinator for details).

Important: Individuals holding a bachelor's degree and showing an adequate proficiency in French may enroll in graduate courses even if they do not wish to enter the Master of Arts program. Our department also allows non-degree/professional students to register for our MA classes. Non-degree or professional students are those students who for a variety of reasons (waiting for GRE or TOEFL results, taking courses for personal enrichment, or just exploring the program) have not yet applied to enter the program officially and/or are still considering their options. However, should they decide to join the program, they can transfer only a maximum of 6 credits taken before matriculation.

To apply to the graduate program in French, students can contact the Graduate School to request an application packet. You can also submit your application online via the Graduate School's Website.
