CHANGES IN THE MA PROGRAM IN FRENCH
(Effective June 2003)

There are a number of structural and curricular differences between the previous MA program and the new one. These differences lie not only in the type of courses required as part of the program, but also in the specific format and requirements of the culminating exams (Comprehensive Exam, Research Seminar and MA Thesis). The most important changes in the MA program can be summarized as follows:

- Students can now specialize in one of two concentrations (Literature or French Studies)

- Students can now take only those courses that are specifically tailored to their specific areas of interest. Each of the two concentrations in the new MA contains three categories thematically organized around sets of courses that allow students to custom-build their own course of study without compromising the breadth and depth of their training.

- The program has enhanced its multicultural content, and now offers a more effective exploration of the diversity inherent in the French-speaking (Francophone) world. A number of new courses have been developed specifically to meet the multicultural requirement of our program.

- The Comprehensive Examination is no longer the only exit exam option. Students wishing to graduate from our program now have the option of either writing an MA Thesis or simply taking the Comprehensive Examination.

- The Research Seminar is no longer a duplicate of the MA Thesis. It has now been changed into a core required course that will train all of our MA students in the art of doing research and writing research papers, thus preparing them more appropriately for advanced graduate work.
