The graduate
program in
French is
designed to
prepare
students for
both
teaching and
research in
language,
literature
and culture.
A Master of
Arts degree
opens
opportunities
to teach in
community
colleges and
high
schools, and
provides a
solid
foundation
for students
interested
in
continuing
their
studies
toward a
Doctor of
Philosophy
degree.
Graduate
training in
French is
also
increasingly
useful for
positions in
government,
industries,
and media
concerned
with
the French-speaking
areas of the
world.
The
Department
of Modern
Languages &
Literatures
(Formerly
Department
of French,
German &
Russian)
has
diversified
its
offerings
for the
Master of
Arts Degree (MA)
program in
French.
Until Spring
2003,
students
seeking to
pursue an MA
in French at
Montclair
State
University
were offered only
one
concentration
in French
Literature.
To respond
to the
growing
needs of its
diverse and
increasing
student
body, our
department
revised
its MA
program in
French not
only in
form, but
also in
content. As
of June
2003,
students
enrolling in
our MA
program can
specialize
in one of
two areas:
MA in
French,
concentration
in
Literature
(with
emphasis on
the study of
the main
literary
trends and
developments
in France
and the
French-speaking
world) or
MA in
French,
concentration
in French
Studies
(with
emphasis on
the French
language,
and the
cultures/civilizations
of France
and the
French-speaking
world).
Students who
matriculated
under the
previous MA
(prior to
June 2003)
will have
the choice
of continuing
under that
format, or
transferring
any credits
already
earned into
any of the
two
concentrations
of the new
MA in
French. To
do this,
students
must contact
the Graduate
Program
Coordinator
and fill out
a "Change of
Concentration"
form.
