Mission Statement |

Sankofa is a concept from the Akan people of Ghana which means to "go back and fetch in order to build for the future." The African American Studies Sankofa Institute is dedicated to sustaining traditions and facilitating growth among individuals, within communities and in the field of Black Studies. Through education and research, the Institute aims to be a force in perpetuating the discipline of Black Studies, generating new knowledge in the field, applying the discipline's theoretical approaches such as Afrocentricity, and implementing activities that are responsive to community needs. |

Serve as a community resource in African American Studies. |

Provide comprehensive education in African American Studies to K-12 teachers. |

Support and initiate the development of Afrocentric educational materials for the K-12 curriculum. |

Encourage the study and critical analysis of the accomplishments, experiences, and evolution of people of African descent from an Afrocentric perspective. |

Provide a forum for MSU faculty, staff, and students to examine Africana Studies via focused study and analysis of critical texts, readings, papers, and other media. |

Serve as a community resource for identifying scholars who can speak on various topics in African American Studies. |

|
Serve as a community resource for information in the field of African American Studies through maintaining a database of relevant bibliographies. |
