READING SEMINAR IN ANTHROPOLOGY
(ANTH 603)
Reading for ANTH 603
Dr. Richard W. Franke, Graduate Advisor
( franker@mail.montclair.edu )

The four books listed below, plus at least one ethnography, make up the reading list for ANTH 603. To be able to answer the questions on the M.A. exam, you should be familiar with these books, in addition to whatever you have read in your classes. If you know any of the subject areas 2 through 4 below especially well, you might be able to skip the review book for it, but consult with me first. And remember to review your class notes and reading notes for all graduate anthropology courses.

  1. Overall:

McGee, R. Jon, and Richard L. Williams.  2004.  Anthropological Theory:  An Introductory History.  New York:  McGraw Hill.  Third Edition.

  2. For cultural anthropology:

Bohannan, Paul, and Mark Glazer, editors. 1989. High Points in Anthropology. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Second edition.

    —OR—

Spradley, James P. and David W. McCurdy, editors. 1994. Conformity and Conflict: Readings in Cultural Anthropology. Glenview, Illinois: Scott, Foresman/Little Brown Higher Education. Eighth edition.

  3. For physical anthropology:

Lewin, Roger. 1987. Bones of Contention: Controversies in the Search for Human Origins. New York: Simon and Schuster (Touchstone).

  4. For archaeology:

Fagan, Brian. 1993. In the Beginning: An Introduction to Archaeology. New York: HarperCollins. Eighth Edition.

  5. Finally, you should be familiar in detail with at least one ethnographic account of a culture other than your own. I especially recommend that you choose a non-Western culture to gain the experience of writing about a culture very different from your own. One guaranteed question on the M. A. exam will be an essay requiring in-depth ethnographic knowledge of a single culture. Among the best-studied cultures for which materials are easily accessible are the:
Akwe Shavante
Andaman Islanders
Arunta
Azande
Aztec

BaMbuti Pygmies
Bemba
Eskimo
