Susan Mann Office Hours: By Appointment
mannsu@montclair.edu Th 11:15 – 12:15pm
The objective of this course is to provide you with an introduction to different ways of viewing and understanding people from other parts of the world. The perspective we will be using is that of Anthropology. We will concentrate our efforts on people from Latin America. The course will be organized both chronologically and according to the different fields of Anthropology.
Topics to be covered include:
· Anthropology – The Four Field Approach
· Anthropology and Museums
· Archaeology
o Pre-Contact Peoples
o Conquest and Colonial Times
· Biological/Physical Anthropology
o Early Race and Adaptation Studies
· Cultural Anthropology
o Revolution and Independence
o Race
o Gender
o Poverty
· Linguistic Anthropology
· Language Rights/Indigenous Rights
· Language and Identity
As this is a large area with a long history, we will only be able to cover representative ideas and issues in class. It is hoped that through your papers and readings you will find other topics to explore on your own.
While all ideas and opinions are welcomed and encouraged, respect for others is required.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Class attendance is central to the successful completion of this course. No extensions/incompletes will be given. Late work will not be accepted.
Everyone will be responsible for reading at least one article/chapter and presenting it to the class. There will be no exceptions.
The
purpose of this class is to teach you a new way of looking at other peoples
- through the lens of Anthropology. Through the practice of reading the
material you will learn this method. While only one person will be required
to present an article/chapter, it is necessary for everyone to have read the
material in advance! It will show in class discussions, your exams and
ultimately your grades. You can lose up to an entire letter grade by not
doing the readings. Be forewarned!
You must come to class having read the material in advance!!!!
