This course will examine the peoples of contemporary Latin America and the Caribbean from an anthropological perspective. We will consider the history, politics and economics of this vast and diverse region. We will consider the cultural diversity of Latin America, as well as some of the most pressing social problems facing the region.
The following books are required. They are available on closed reserve in the library and in the campus bookstore:
·Winn, Peter. Americas: The Changing Face of Latin America and the Caribbean.
·McCaffrey, Katherine. Military Power and Popular Protest: The U.S. Navy in Vieques, Puerto Rico.
·Montejo, Victor. Voices from Exile: Violence and Survival in Modern Maya History.
·Tobar, Héctor. The Tattooed Soldier.
The following are the readings to be completed by the indicated class period. As the course relies on classroom participation (which will constitute a significant part of your course grade) rather than course lectures, it is essential to do the reading on time.
