Humanities and author of Terence Fisher: Horror, Myth and Religion will give an multimedia lecture "The Redeemer Hero - From Marduk to Star Wars" Cohen Lounge, Dickson Hall Thursday, November 6th, 7:00-8:00 PM. The figure of the Redeemer Hero has fascinated us for centuries. This is the ultimate hero who, risking his life and sometimes his soul, rescues his community. This hero occurs as far back as the Babylonian Creation Myth in the character of Marduk and persists on up to Batman: The Dark Knight. This hero appeared prominently in Britain's famous film company Hammer Studios in the 1950' - 60's, where he was portrayed by Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee, both well known from the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings series. The influence of these Hammer Films can be found also in The Matrix and Batman as well as other comic book heroes such as Superman, Spider Man and Iron Man, not to mention numerous horror and science friction films. Learn why this hero has such an enduring appeal and fascination!! |
