Using the infinitive. # 1

An earlier page described how to form and translate the infinitive. Do you remember?

Give the infinitive form of festino.
And what is the translation of this form?

The infinitive is often used with verbs that mean I wish, I can, I order etc. Here are examples using two such verbs we have learned.

Geta  agricolis urnas portare  imperat Geta orders the farmers to carry the water jars
Urgulania Livillae cenam parare  imperat.  Urgulania orders Livillae to prepare dinner.
Aquilia et Drusilla choreas spectare optant.  Aquilia and Drusilla wish to see the dances.
Valeria casam aedificare optat.  Valeria wishes to build a hut.

Notice how infinitive can take a direct object.

Here are three new verbs. The first also takes the infinitive.

coepto, coeptare  I begin to do, I try to do.
exspecto, exspectare  I wait for, expect
turbo, turbare  I disturb, trouble.

Here are ten simple sentences to translate. Please (so that it will be easier for me to give credit for all correct answers,) put direct objects before indirect objects where they occur and use standard English word order. Put a period after the end of sentences and begin with a capitalized word. If there is a second plural verb form, (such as lavatis) translate it as 'you pl. wash'. And, even though it is proper English, do not use the 's as in the farmer's daughter or contractions like don't. Javascript sometimes has problems with too many apostrophes. Also, do not put more than one space between words. When you have written your translation in the space provided, click the Check button.
