As far as I can tell, AOL's internal chat can only serve AOL's own chat services.

However, newer versions of AOL (versions 3.0 and 4.0) rely on the user having IE3.0 or 4.0 (respectively) installed into their machine in order to use many of AOL (powered by IE's) services.

Internet Explorer has it's own Chat program called "MicroSoft Chat" and this program is IRC compatible. Although the default channel is for a very bizarre cartoon avatar chat channel run out of microsoft, if you tell it to connect to chss2.montclair.edu:6667 , the program has no problems doing so. It seems a fairly straight forward program to use.

(Note: Even if you have installed InterNet Explorer, you may not have installed MicroSoft Chat as it is an optional application. You may correct this by either running IE's setup program again and choosing a custom installation making sure Microsoft chat is checked, or if you are running IE4.0, you may load IE4.0 and then select:

Help -> Product Updates

and it will take you to Microsoft's update page which will scan your system (with your permission) and then let you know what IE4.0 (or Win98) software is installed, not installed, or updated. You may then select to install Microsoft Chat using the onscreen directions.

The far more popular mIRC, vIRC, and many other chat programs (some IRC and some not IRC compatible) are available from http://www.download.com
