I agree with William's statement to Adso that the issue at hand is not whether Christ was poor, but whether the church is obliged to embrace the notion of poverty as well. If the pope and priests teach poverty as an ideal, than the church must follow its own preaching. However, will those in charge be willing to give up their riches? Probably not. However, this issue goes beyond the notion of poverty and is a political struggle as well. In many circles, wealth=status=power. If the church claims poverty, than can it have any politcal influence? Yet another question arises from that thought...is it even the place of the church to be executing political decisions for the people?
