The issue of poverty for the church is a touchy one. In order for teh church to keep pace with the Roman Empire, the Church must retain some semblence of power over its people. Now if the church were to completely give up its riches, and return to a type of "grass roots" campaign, who would follow. Only the strong of faith, and if the church were poor, instead of thr rich powerful entity it is, how could they attract conversions? The Minorities wish for the church to "imitate Jesus", but the Chruch wants to have nothing to do with this. They feel that there must be a measure of heirarchy in order to keep the christain followers in line. If there is not order, and not higher up authority, who will keep hereticts out of the church, that would seek to destroy the church. The pope has no intentions of reforming into poverty, and he wishes to quell the uprising of those who wish him to do so, by proclaiming them hereticts
