I agree with your feelings about the pope. There is no reason why he will give up his riches and his power for anything. At the same time, he cannot appear as a heretic so he must propogate the belief that Jesus was wealthy. In addition, he declares anyone who says otherwise a heretic and sends that person to burn at the stake.
