I found your observations about William to be very interesting. I had not previously thought about his character in terms of the conflict between the church and poverty. Oddly enough, although he is indeed a monk, throughout the novel I percieved him as somewhat separate from the rest of the characters. Your observation about his material goods are accurate, as he can not embrace the idea of poverty while using his glasses and other "high tech" instruments that would be unavailable to the general public.
