Sharon, I agree with you 100%. Not just in "many circles," I'd say in ALL societies, whether they admit it or not, wealth=status=power. It seems kind of dirty for the Church to involve itself in social politics, but how else could it propagate its beliefs and further its agenda? Like any group, it needs to politicize its cause in order to gain support for it and achieve it -one of the unpleasant truths of the real world.
