I found your comments on the church being unwilling to give up its rights to legislate on earthly matters to be very interesting. I never really considered that the reason would be that they would then be right alongside with the common man, and that they (members of the hierarchy of the church) are obviously unwilling to do so. Because wealth usually equates to power and privelege, these members of the church would then become like all of the "lower" members of society and not only have no power within the political realm of society. They would also lose their power to invoke fear of God and of eternal damnation to the masses.
