I think Susie's got it right on the nose, especially about people questioning their place in the world and wanting to find a "better," wealthier life. I wonder that more people in Medieval times didn't question this... Perhaps it was the fear of retribution that kept them silent. As insanely corrupt as the Church was (as likely still is, I don't know), they still had a huge amount of power, and if they didn't like you, they could squash you. Sometimes literally.
