I think that this preface was an interesting introduction to the story of Adso. I think that it set up the story leaving a little mystery behind it. He found the manuscript in 1968, but did not finish the story until 1980. He mentions that he finally felt free to tell the story. He lost some of the original translation when his lover left him, and when he went to continue his research he found different versions of it. It took him awhile to decide to write it and he seemed happy when he finally did.
