I found your comparison to "Indiana Jones" rather humerous, but true. The pursuit of knowledge in The Name of the Rose was just as exciting as finding the lost manuscript in "Indiana Jones." I think that the books in Eco's novel represent the power which the church holds over the heads of its people. The church can hold much greater power over a group of individuals who are poor and uneducated. Once the people are given access to the books, they may realize how unfair the class system is and begin to revolt against the wealthy.
