I found Melissa Snell's web site to be extremely interesting. In giving information about the black death, she gives much more information than merely dry facts. Snell's commentary on the emotional aspects of the plague really affected me. As she described the abandonment that members of the community experienced, my heart simply broke. I can't imagine being a child who is abandoned by her family, fearful of disease. I can understand the fear experienced by the people, as they had no idea what was causing the disater (leading them to assume it was punishment from God). I also had no idea that Jews were persecuted at this time as well. The flagellants she described sound similar to fanatical christians today (i.e., those who bomb abortion clinics). I found it interesting that I had never before encountered these facts about the black death in all of my years at school.
