I also found Snell's website to be very helpful in providing a background to Piers the Ploughman and the Black Death. The utter panic and helplessness experienced Europeans seems incredible. One thought that has popped into my mind several times while reading about the plague is that AIDS is treated similarly to the Black Death. AIDS has been continually blamed on the gay population, as God's punishment for "immoral" activities. I found your remark about people losing faith in God because their prayers weren't answered to be rather interesting. I wonder if this could possibly happen to religious individuals today, or was it merely a phenomenon of the Middle Ages?
