Eco seems to be representing the corruption of the church through his writing. Talking of the riches certain orders have witin the church organization shows that there is at least a question of this being wrong or right. When it comes down to an order focusing on how much they have materialisticly, do they not forget about God and the values they are supposed to represent? The argument that the monks have is ridiculous. Eco seems to realize this when Adso asks if there are no better arguments(345). As for the poverty of Jesus it is also stated that "as God he received from the Father universal control over everything; He was the owner of everything"(342). The matter at hand is that the monks are missing the point. For one to be rich he need not possess material things. If they have a stong soul and mind, does that not make them the richest of all?
