Eco does represent this argument as ridiculous in that even in arguing this all-important point, the monks lose their track (and their cool) and verbally abuse each other. But is either side wrong or right? Both sides make their cases with arguments founded in scripture and logic (for the most part). The Minorites are the choice of the heart, as they appeal to one's human side. The Dominicans appeal to our sensiblities because they are shrewd. I think one anecdote I have heard (normally referring to politics) sums this argument up well: "If you aren't a liberal by age 20, you have no heart. If you aren't conservative by age 40, you have no brain." I cannot say that I agree with what I have just wrote, as I feel more for the Franciscans. But from a philosophical observer's standpoint, neither side is so right or so wrong. Both are attempting to preserve what is most important to them.
