In the novel the "Name of the Rose," William tells Adso "But the question is not whether Christ was poor; it is whether the church must be poor. And poor does not so much mean owning a palace or not; it means, rather, keeping or renouncing the right to legislate on earthly matters (345)." This quote brings up the issue of poverty, which is presented throughout the novel. It is said that Christ lived a simple life and his death was just the same. Therefore the question is whether the church should keep or abandon the right to make laws on earthly matters. The people of the church live like kings with gold and palaces surrounding them. It seems as though that the church reserves the right to tell you what the bible really meant. The church also reserved the right to lock up all the knowledge in a hidden place called the library, from its people. Therefore no one could go against the church. There were only a small percentage of the people, who were wealth and had the power to make laws, the rest of the classes were left out in the dark. The church should bring itself to the level of the people it is trying to address.
