Yes, I agree with what you have to say in regards to the understanding of the preface. It is quite a difficult concept to grasp when looked from the perspective of the author but I feel that it is quite an important concept to understand when looking at it from the hiearchical perspective. I think all this means is simply how to undertand the church in relation to the people's authority and off course the people never had any authority, or at least the common people. So what is there really to understand? I think the ruling class make assumptions which need to be made and looked upon in a way that can make clear the resulting fate of all the fact and consequences. That is to say I think that the king and papal authority were vested in the interests of the common man and this can be seen by the introduction, so I agree with what you have to say.
