I think Cheryl has uncovered something interesting. I wonder if the act of writing is being implied as an ahistorical act, though. Eco writes like Adso because it is always the same text regardless of the historical period or the additions to a specific text. Unlike the library that is based on the map of the world, the world is actually the text itself wherein any idea contributes to the whole discourse. The fact that Adso's manuscript has been corrupted is necessary and valuable in order to combat static forms of knowledge. In fact, this discussion thread is nothing more than a continuation of Adso's narrative!
