I think that it is very important to remember that this is a fictional "Preface", and has to be taken only at face value. It is rather apparent that in the text, there does exist a few happenings that are present in thre novel, but I think that they are there for that sole purpose. In a sense this could be a pre-cursor to the flow of the novel. Yet it could be interpretated as a way of conveying that in the 14th century, authors had the same problems, difficulties and distractions as they do today. The art of writing a novel has changed over the centuries without a doubt, yet the way a person thinks of one really hasn't.
