I think that it is very important to remember that this is a fictional "Preface", and has to be taken only at face value. It is rather apparent that in the text, there does exist a few happenings that are present in thre novel, but I think that they are there for that sole purpose. In a sense this could be a pre-cursor to the flow of the novel. Yet it could be interpretated as a way of conveying that in the 14th century, authors had the same problems, difficulties and distractions as they do today. The art of writing a novel has changed over the centuries without a doubt, yet the way a person thinks of one really hasn't. In the text he frequently refers to moments that he feel like giving up and the road blocks he had to get over to complete this translation. He states, "I transcribe my text with no concern for timeliness." and he goes on to say that"..(I) can happily write out of pure love of wrietng." This, I think, has been indicitive of writers throughout history.
