In regards to your comment to the last two paragraphs of the preface, I must say I was thinking along the same lines as you. When I read them (the paragraohs) I asked myself similar questions. And I still ask in agreement with you, Is there a social relevence between these two time periods in which he speaks of the purpose of literature? Obviously It may be hard for us to answer that question, but maybe by saying what he said, he could be implying this to us as readers. However, why would anyone want to write out of commitment with the intentions to possibly change the world? I think that today it is good that many do so out of love instead. I also agree about letting the reader know of the cicumstance in which the book was found. If his intention was to tell us that it had been lacking any relevance for our day, then why write it at all. I don't feel that it was important to mention that to us as readers.
