I think you have a good point here Cheryl. Why would Eco write about something if he felt that it was "lacking relevance" and that it was "atemporarily alien to our hopes and our certainties" if he felt that Adso did so in his writing during the 12th and 13th centuries. Not only is this paralleling the situation, to me Eco may be contradicting himself.

I also agree with the point you made about the hunt for the "hidden source". After Eco had been spun into his journey to find the underlying source to his Vallet manuscripts, he definitely shows a comparison to the monks in the novel. They are too looking to find a hidden source as they use their clues to help pursue it.
