I do think that people who write books that are to be published always write out of commitment to change the world in some way. Eco certainly had the intention of seeking an audience's attention by writing an 'interesting' novel that would prompt those to buy. So, by pursuing the consumer market, Eco is contributing to some sort of "change" in a person's (readers) thinking whether he intends to or not. Those people who write for the love of it would not seek the almighty dollar. After all, some of the best writing has been discovered in personal journals, diaries, memoirs, etc. Am I making sense here? :-)
