I think that Eco wrote this story to sell books. The fact that he brings up Adso in his "preface" is just a matter of relating medieval times to now, present day. If there was no Adso there would be no book. However in a spectacular way he relates the story to us in a method of being the outsider telling the story at the same time as he is being the story teller. To relate this medieval story to present times would only be to bring up the hierarchal issue of the text. Otherwise this book was written inthe twentieth century why shouldn't it reflect on the way we think and react to life today?
