When writing my commentary, I focused on the differences outlined in the manuscript rather than the similiarities. In reading your commentary, I can see that there are similiarities that I overlooked. The social aspects are probably more similiar than I think. The problem is that we live in a democracy where church and state are differentiated. Eco's novel demonstrates a time when there was no separation between church and state. Just this fact causes a lot of conflict in comparing these two different centuries.
