Whenever we read something we either try to question the work we are reading or just skip over it. In this novel "The Name of the Rose," Eco tries to get people to question the work or simply tell us more about the work by cleverly creating fictional character. It is our job to figure out the purpose of the whole fictional manuscript. This main character of this manuscript seems to be very interested in medieval literature. He is obsessed with finding this fourteenth-century manuscript which seems to be lost. He is fascinated with the story of Adso, who he thinks is the main character of the book. The narrator is narrow minded and he doesn't see what is going on around him except the fact he wants to put together the pieces of this manuscript. He spends most of his time trying desperately to find this particular manuscript but at the end it seems as though he could care less about it.
