I asked myself the same question "Is this story true?" When I read the preface it seems real because of the works he finds in different libraries. He names the entire scholar and their works and the fact that he has to leave Prague because the Soviet troops has invaded the city. Just like any real editor the narrator asks himself what style he should employ to the manuscript and he goes on to question the many styles of writing that are out there. How tries vigorously to interpret the manuscript and tries to get inside of Adso mind. This preface made the book seems interesting especially when you wonder why the narrator is so obsessed with the manuscript.
