I really think there is a parallel between what the preface is saying and what is in the book. In the preface it is talked about the war that happened in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In this war there was a change of communist figures and parties. The base of the communist party is for one to make things equal for all, which never really happens. However the dictator is the sole and only one in charge of the whole nation. That person holds all the decisions and can withhold whatever he or she chooses. With this in mind I realized that when I took these ideas I could then apply them to the rest of the novel. The Abbott in this monastery has done the same thing. The knowledge that is in the library can not be learned because it is being with held from the public and from the monks. This type of communism that was prevalent in Prague is also prevalent in the monastery. This I see as a foreshadowing of what is to come, William is the new dictator coming to take over the monastery.
