The understanding as I see the reality of looking at both issues of novel and film are similar to each other in many ways and very different in other ways as well. The issue that I feel deserves the most attention as it pertains to the novel is the association of the hierarchy of power that filters into the basic social status of the government at that time. To be certain, I think that understanding the role of interpretation from a neutral perspective could and would be a negative perspective. That is, clearly the novel deals with circumstances that the film does not touch on such as this very important issue of hierarchical status of power which clearly should be dealt with to understand any of the issues pertaining to the motivations of the book and the characters in the book and movie.
