The history of the heretical factions is mainly left out to a large extent in the film. The debates and discussions of poverty are minimized as well. But looking at this through the eyes of the filmmaker, to center the script around the mystery would help to "sell" the film. If the filmmaker didn't use the mystery plot to drive the film, he wouldn't gain much of an audience. I feel that the movie did try to emphasize the poverty issue through images rather than lengthy dialogue. I felt that the character of the peasant girl was strong. She never spoke a word but her emotions and movement spoke volumes. It caused me to really feel her strife. Also, the peasant revolt at the witch burning burned a strong image into my brain more than the novel. I was able to see and feel their hatred for the Church in those last scenes.
