While the movie encompassed the basic points of the novel's ending, it was rather different. Especially since the movie dwelled more on the mystery part than on the culture which was thick throughout the novel. Maybe it's just me, but I found that if I hadn't read the novel, I feel like I wouldn't have understood the ending as well. You miss a lot of the subtleties of the machinations behind the deaths. In the novel, William and Jorge calmly discuss everything that has gone on, enlightning the reader to all that he may have missed. In the novel, Jorge doesn't do as much explaining. I guess you would get the point, but not quite as significantly as in the novel. And Jorge's explanation is heard as he and William and Adso are running about in the library, which further shortens and diminishes the information you glean from this last conversation.
