Visual almost always seems to help in understanding. Despite the fact that the movie doesn't spend that much time dwelling on the question of poverty as much as that of who killed who, the mere factor of the costuming helps the viewer understand who is on who's side. The Franciscan and Benedictine monks wear simple robes. And for the most part it seems that the Franciscans, who have no issues with laughter, wear a light colored robe. The Benedictines, those formidable ones who do not laugh and do not speak during their meal, wear black. When the Pope's representatives arrive, they wear white and red and ornate jewelry and hats. Even Bernard Gui, and the rest of the inquisition's party, wear a nicer looking black robe with the white underneath. The different factions, while not always able to verbally express their opinions during the movie are able to show where they stand and who they stand for just by what they wear.
