I think that to bring the larger issues into the film would diminish its entertainment value. To us, as readers of the novel, we are thirsting to see the poverty debates and the history of the heretics, etc. But think of watching this film for entertainment purposes, how bored you'd be with these things. The filmmaker has to "sell" the film to an audience for it to be a success. I doubt that viewers would be interested in anything but the mystery plot of NOR.
