I agree Cheryl. Entertainment is a mask. We should remember the quote about literature as a means of edifying or delighting the audience. The same can be said for cinema as well. However, as critical viewers we have to "read" the images as closely as we read the text. I think in this way definite issues arise out of the movie that would otherwise be unnoticed. For instance, the papal envoy and their elaborate dress "speaks" volumes about their otherwise silent position on poverty. Adso's narrative doesn't mention this visual image, only relying on the actual debate. In this sense, the idea of film vs. text becomes another social interpretation. Like I said in my first posting, I'm left wondering why the film presents such issues to a modern audience in a different way than the novel and what that says about that group of "readers."
