There were many differences I found between Eco's novel and the movie. The main one, however, was the whole notion of the poverty of Christ. In the novel, that particular issue kept reappering. It was a key element and anon-going debate. In the movie, the subject was only touched upon, which surprised me. I never expected that topic to be covered in a 30 second time span.
Not only was I surprised, but I was also dissapointed. This issue was the one that caused the most trouble while reading Eco's novel. I was hoping that hearing the debate and putting faces to those that spoke would have helped me to understand each sides argument better by following who believed what. Even though I better understand the poverty of Christ through class discussions, I was looking to grasp the whole concept through the movie as if I never read the book. If this topic was so irrelevant in the movie, then why did Eco seem to devote pages and pages of it in his novel?
