Kerri, although your comments and research on the tower are significant in interpreting the poem, we shouldn't exclude the social context imbedded within the text and defining it to some degree. It isn't so strange that the poem centers on earthly matters with earthbound images when we keep in mind the irruption of a static, harmonious concept of society being replaced by a materialist view. In this regard, "truth" is not named because it is indefinable and dependant on a host of interpretations. The tower is heaven, truth, whatever, but the focus is the relation between the world below, and its social discord and the ideal held within the tower. No longer can the tower represent an overwhelming idea or ideology in the face of a new economy and social structure.
