The history of the United States is a very violent one. The history one is taught in school is wrought with violence. However, this violence is a detached "safe" violence. It is one of wars fought to "make the world safe for democracy" and of extremely "necessary" means of cruelty used by our government to fight “oppressors,” “savages,” and basically any group or faction that impeded the pursuit of the so-called American Dream. The account of history one receives in school is distorted and censored in order to instill the student with a sense of pride and patriotism. It is taught to keep the masses content with the illusion of a glorious and free country. It is taught to keep the masses obedient.
However, the true history of the United States (the labor history) is a history of atrocities committed by the government and the elite against the people of America. It is the unending story of the exploitation and manipulation of the very people whose sweat and toil this country is run on. It is the story if an ongoing war that has been waged on the people of the United States by those in power. It is the story of how exercising basic rights such as freedom of speech and that of peaceful assembly have become crimes. It is the story of a few profiting greatly while the majority lives below the poverty line. It is the story where corporations and the government hire vigilantes and employ espionage to conveniently do away with troublesome laborers who were fighting merely for a wage high enough to live on. It is the story of terribly violent raids, in which those captured and seized were painfully tortured or thrown in jail, carried out by the government in an effort to crush any possible fight for freedom (page 212).
Therefore, the history one is taught in school is a falsified version. The history of “labor” is that of inexcusable and barbaric violence and cruelty imposed on those who fought for equality and fair treatment which, by the government’s standards, is an act punishable by law.
