I like to think that I am not ignorant; yet, the materials I'm reading in this class, including Labor's Untold Story, Freedom Road, The Proud and the Free and Black Thunder, have shown me that I am. I was disgusted by a lot of what I read in LUS, particularly in the first chapter we read, where the true beneficiaries of the Civil War were revealed to be the rich and not the slaves. American history that is forced down our throats from elementary school up tells us otherwise; that it was a great war fought for liberation. It's frustrating to know that the powers that be are afraid to tell us the truth. It's also frustrating to see those that know the truth being put down by force sent out by a government that's supposed to protect us. We live under a false sense of security, led to believe that we will be protected by those we don't even truly elect to office. The only ones protected are the ones who have more money than god.
