History has been tremendously distorted as it has been taught in American schools. An explaination for this distortion and glorifing of facts probably stems from the wealthy's need to perpetuate their power. It seems we are taught the wealthy's version of history as it suits their needs which are to remain in power. If it were actually taught that the Revolutionary War was fought for the wealthy gentry who benefited from the solier's sweat and blood only to leave them starving and freezing while they had all the food, clothing, shelter and housing, there would not be the same feelings of pride and nationalism for that war that our country seems to cherish so deeply. If it were actually taught that the Union was not interested in freeing the slaves beyond the reason that slavery was not economically convienient for them, we would be disgusted with ourselves. It is important and necessary that a country has a great deal of pride and nationalism in order for it to succeed. If a country does not, then this is when protest and war occur. The illusion must be upheld that our country is better than any other country; otherwise what is to keep us loyal to America. By providing us with glorified and wonderful images of our nation's history, we the citizens are loyal and will protect it. The poor and middle-class outnumber the wealthy popualtion by a great deal. In order to prevent us from ousting them from power, they instill us with a great sense of nationalism so we remain loyal. This has been done time and time again and will continue to be done-as long as the wealthy remain in power and the distribution of wealth remains unequal.
