When the Bolsheviks took Russia for the proletariat in 1917 it sent shivers down the spines of Imperialists around the globe. Those that thrived on the exploitation of the masses wanted to be sure that it wouldn’t happen to them. This was especially true to America in this era. After WWI the U.S. had emerged as a super power, when the economy is good, people believe in their government, and when the owners see that kind of positivism(undeserved, misdirected enthuiasm) towards them, they want to keep it. So it is in times of great National prosperity that thinking that does not conform with the establishment are most harshly persecuted, the Sacco and Vanzetti framing and subsequent murder by the state is a direct extension of this. The 1920’s were one of the most fascist decades in American history, and it was tolerated by the public because they were distracted with the soaring stock market and Al Capone, conversely during the depression when the failings of Capitalism were grossly apparent, labor unions, communists and other workers organizations had their greatest support.(from the people)
