Jennifer Zimmerman After reading Gen. Colin Powell’s comments on the Vietnam War, I can’t help but notice how the war has desensitized him. His speech is very matter- of - fact and he accepts the brutality that went on. I feel sorry for him because I believe that the war and all that he witnessed caused these adverse effects. I also believe that this was probably the case for many of those who fought in the war. The kill or be killed theory is understandable. The soldiers believed that their lives were being threatened, so they acted accordingly. I do not think, however, that this justifies the atrocities and the killings that went on. It would be impossible for me to say exactly what should have been done because I don’t know what really went on there; I didn’t witness it first-hand. Despite this, I can’t help feeling that people were killed and tortured for no good reason and that the American government is responsible for it. I don’t think that the deaths of people should be referred to with such a lack of emotion. It is a serious matter that should be taken seriously
